Who says you need a mattress for every sofa bed? The traditional sofa beds are designed to always come with at least one twin-size mattress that folds under the base of the sofa and requires a two to three step mechanism to convert it into bed form.
However, through the creativity and testing of new innovations by the manufacturers, the contemporary sofa beds have produced much more economical and simpler designs that are more straightforward and easier to remodel.
Frame of modern sofa beds
As usual, wood and metals are the main design materials for modern sofa beds, as well as others. Where the wood is for the sofa and the metal is for the bed.
However, there are some visible differences in the design patterns of the modern sofa bed. They usually have higher and solid metal legs. That’s rightly because after the remodel, the legs would be the bed’s support legs. It is also common to see sofas without armrests as opposed to the traditional designs.
The contemporary forms are much simpler sofas and lightweight finishes.
Pull out sofa beds
This is similar to the traditional sofa bed design, but in this case, no mattress is included with your pullout, instead the pullout has a cushion that resembles the seat and is a large extension of the seating area, providing enough sleeping space.
Convertible sofa beds
The convertible modern sofa beds are much easier to use. The very simple designs transform the backrest into a flat surface that harmonises with the seat of the sofa, creating a larger sleeping bed. On some, the base is raised until a click is heard and then lowered again, which would have flattened the backrest.
Other than the above convertible that has no headboard molded, there are some other convertibles that have the backrest and armrests converted into a headboard. This conversion can be done in three steps. This is the fold out mechanism type.
